10 New Job Search Trends that you need to know

Job applications increase during the start of the year, so right now is the best time to write or revise your current resume. You may have the same mindset along with other job seekers–how will you increase your odds? In order to stand out from the crowd, you should know about what hiring managers are looking for. Here is a list of trends from the past year that can help you write an effective and impactful resume.

1. Candidate-centered Recruitment

A generic resume does nothing to help you stand out. You need to write a focused resume for the specific job you want. This may mean multiple resumes, but the results are worth the effort. Your experience is essential. Even if you are a student, you have to match your skills, practices and involvement in your profession with the job description that you are reading. If they want a specific credential and you have it, make sure to mention it in detail.

2. Employer Brand

When you apply for a job, what else do you look for, aside from the job descriptions? You got it! It’s the employer brand. Most companies today declare a cause they believe in and support. Before you submit your resume and cover letter ensure that the beliefs and ideals of the company reflect your own. Visit the company website, read their mission statement, and do some research before you commit to applying.

3. Skills Development

If you think your skills need an upgrade, then you must attend seminars to elevate your knowledge and skills. Continuing education, new certifications, conferences, symposiums and new skills that you acquire should be visible for a hiring manager to see. How did you develop professionally since you last wrote a resume? Your resume is a living, breathing document that should be updated and revised yearly. Choose a day, a week or a specific time (I use my birthday) to think about all of the accomplishments that you have achieved and figure out how to add it to your resume.

4. Diverse Recruiting

Companies are becoming more culturally competent and at the forefront of equity and diversity is the hiring process. You do not need to be fearful that your name, address, places you have worked, or experiences you would like to mention may seem "too ethic". You must play your strengths-prove that you have the skills and the attitude, regardless of your race and gender.

5. Human Resources Technology

When you think of human resources, do you expect to meet robots along the way? While it may be unheard of years back, technology has changed the way humans get hired. Gone are the days you’ll just submit your written resumes. Now you need to think similar to a machine–in clues and codes. Think in terms of “buzzwords” that an Applicant Tracking System (ATS) will pick up when your resume is scanned, way before a human even looks at it.

6. Candidate Relationship Management

Imagine meeting several potential job candidates hoping to get the same spot you aim for. All of you have your eyes on the prize. How will human resources keep track? They use a new tool called a Candidate Relationship Management System. Along with applicant tracking systems, the recruitment arm of the company uses technology to bring the hiring process at a par with the changing times. This system reviews resumes, tags candidates (similar to the way you tag your friends on Instagram)and can provide automated interactions to grow a talent pool.

7. Recruitment Marketing

It’s all about being connected. Aside from displaying your skills, enrich your contacts. 2020 job search trends follow the millennial mindset of being inclusive, so you better build rapport with your network! With shorter attention spans with each new generation, you may get selected first if you submit a cover letter and a great resume to a job post right away.

8. Inbound Recruiting

What is the best way to get a job? When you receive an offer when you least expect it. Do you have an idea how it happens? It could be inbound recruiting. You’re on the radar of certain companies, that’s why they continue to engage with you, hoping that you choose them as your next employer. LinkedIn is a great professional networking tool for this. If you are not on there, you definitely should be if you are looking for a job.

9. Social Recruiting

Did you know you could get scouted using social media? That’s right. As part of the changing schemes to get the best hires, recruiters turn to social media, not just to do background checks, but to seek candidates who could join their firms. They could even encourage you to apply! Now, you know why you should be more careful of what you post online.

10. Collaborative Hiring

Did you know hiring managers have another ally in terms of recruitment? They have their coworkers. Companies give incentive if employees refer good candidates. If you have friends in your profession or industry, it may be time to communicate with them.
